TheStudios blog: Reasons to stay in Wolverhampton for the Commonwealth Games.
The Birmingham22 Commonwealth Games are fast approaching, with competitors and spectators from around the globe descending across the West Midlands.
Although the main games are being hosted in Birmingham, Wolverhampton West Park will be the start and finish point for the Cycling Time Trials.
Black Country Cycling Time Trials
On Thursday 4 August the Time Trial will be racing through the Black Country, leaving West Park before heading through the city, into parts of Dudley, South Staffordshire, before returning to the finish line back in West Park.
One of cycling’s toughest events, the Cycling Time Trials is a race against the clock for individual cyclists and a major test of strength and endurance.
The event will see over 90 cyclists competing in the competition and will be free for spectators along the route.
Wolverhampton has strong links to road cycling, with the first mass start cycling road race being held there in 1942 and leading riders such as Hugh Porter and Percy Stallard coming from the city.
European Champion Andy Tennant, originally from Wolverhampton helped launch the event back in 2020.
He said: “It’s fantastic news as Wolverhampton has hosted some big events I’ve taken part in, such as the Tour of Britain.
“I went to London 2012, Glasgow 2014 and I saw the impact it had on everyone, with all those involved loving it, so I really hope everyone comes out and supports it. I’m a proud Wulfrunian and I’m very proud to see it here, so I hope it will be a great event!”
