Sustainable Studio Living Made Simple
Sustainable apartment living is a much simpler ideal than you might think. Once you’ve decided to live in a modern studio apartment, reducing your environmental impact can be a natural way to improve your day-to-day comfort and efficiency. Here at TheStudios, every apartment in our vertical living haven has been deliberately designed around the smart use of space, with sustainability fitting naturally into each studio.
Living sustainably does not mean dramatic change, as small adjustments can have a meaningful impact. Sustainable studio living is just about using what you have wisely and creating a space that supports your wellbeing and the planet.
Improve Energy Efficiency in Your Studio
Simple tweaks to your energy efficiency can be the most effective way to achieve sustainable apartment living. Our studio apartments are efficient by design, but there are a couple of easy ways to reduce energy usage further:
- Make the Most of Natural Light: During the day, open blinds and work or relax near windows. This reduces the need for lights to be on and creates a brighter, more uplifting room.
- Unplug Devices When Not in Use: Chargers, appliances and even entertainment systems often continue drawing power even when off. With an extension lead, turning off multiple items at once is easy.
- Make Use of Communal Areas: Our whole building is built around social spaces. Whether you’re working, reading or relaxing, using shared spaces naturally reduces the need for energy use within your own studio.
It may seem simple, but getting into these habits can have a genuine effect on overall energy usage, helping our entire building edge just that little bit closer to a more sustainable way of living.

Choose Sustainable Furniture and Decor
Sustainability extends to furnishing, too. Our studios come fully furnished, but we know some residents like to bring their own, whether to make spaces more personal or to help build up furniture they can take when they move on.
Buy cheap, buy twice. Choosing high-quality, durable furniture reduces the need for frequent replacements and limits unnecessary waste. Investing once in a well-made item often proves more sustainable.
Taking this a step further, furniture made from responsibly sourced wood, recycled materials or sustainable fabrics also contributes to sustainable living. Even with small items, this can support an environmentally conscious lifestyle.
Multi-functional furniture, such as storage beds or foldaway desks, can also help maximise your space while reducing the need for an excess of items. Sustainable apartment living often means owning less but making smarter choices, creating a clean and considered space.
Reduce Waste with Everyday Habits
Reducing waste is central to living more sustainably. In a studio apartment, a clutter-free and efficient layout will naturally help lessen consumption through simple habits like using reusable water bottles, coffee cups and food containers. This all helps to reduce single-use plastics. You can even opt for refillable cleaning products and toiletries.
Recycling correctly is just as important. Separating recyclable materials and disposing of waste responsibly helps keep your living space and the communal areas of the building much more pleasant.
Being smart with how things are thrown away lowers environmental impact and helps build more organised and pleasant studio spaces. Over time, these habits become a natural way to boost your approach to sustainable studio living.
Use Plants to Create a Healthier Studio

It’s always nice to have a bit of greenery around and bring a little of the outdoors inside. As well as adding a splash of colour to your surroundings, indoor plants can also help to improve air quality and absorb any lingering pollutants. It’s an easy way to bring both sustainability and wellbeing into your studio.
If you lead a busy life, low-maintenance plants are ideal, and there are plenty to choose from. For starters, varieties such as snake plants, spider plants, rubber plants and peace lilies are known for their resilience and easy-care properties. Take it a step further and grow herbs on your windowsill, which you could then use in our communal kitchens in your meal prep. It’s all part of the more self-sufficient lifestyle.
Whether it’s plants, flowers or herbs, greenery can make a real difference to your studio, whether you’re naturally green-fingered or just starting with houseplants.
Review the Layout for Natural Light and Comfort
When we first came to Birch Street in 2017, one of the first things we fell in love with about our building was the number of windows and how we could build studio apartments to benefit from their layout.
In that spirit, it’s worth considering how to best arrange your space to take advantage of this. For example, larger furniture should be positioned so it doesn’t block natural light, and windows should be unobstructed to allow the maximum amount of daylight into your studio. During warmer months, allowing air to circulate freely can help reduce the need for any additional cooling, too. In colder weather, closed blinds in the evening help retain warmth.
Thoughtful planning of your layout can also enhance functionality. When your studio flows efficiently, you are less likely to accumulate unnecessary items or rely on additional electrical appliances. It may seem abstract to begin with, but sustainable apartment living often begins with making the most of your space.
Practice Mindfulness and Sustainable Living
None of this needs to be complicated. Sustainable apartment living is less about perfection and more about small choices that fit naturally into your routine. To that end, it’s worth thinking about how intentional decision making can really help you live a more sustainable life. It’s all about making the decision and repeating the pattern until it becomes second nature.
Small digital switches may make life easier, too, especially if space is at a premium. Moving to online billing and storing documents electronically cuts down on paper and keeps everything organised. Choosing cleaning products with fewer harsh chemicals helps with the sustainability push, and opting for higher-quality items can often combat false economy and lessen how often things need to be replaced.
Simple habits such as recycling properly, being mindful of energy use and treating shared spaces with care all contribute to a better experience for everyone. Every little helps in a community-focused building like ours.
