Wolverhampton Steps Up for Ukraine

As well as hosting our own event in support of Ukraine, we would like to shed a little light on the kind acts of support in the local community.

According to the Disasters Emergency Committee, up to 18 million people will be affected by the escalating conflict in Ukraine in one way or another, while 4 million will be displaced as the fighting continues. Already, at least 2 million refugees have fled their homes to escape the conflict.

Earlier this month, an emergency notice pledging increased support for the people of Ukraine was unanimously voted through by Wolverhampton Council.

A council spokesman stated that “We have a long and proud history of being a city of sanctuary, (and) we will ensure we play our fair role in any Government plan to welcome and provide support to Ukraine refugees.

“Wolverhampton Council stands with and expresses support for the people of Ukraine and the Ukrainian community in our city, following the illegal invasion by the Russian State of the independent, democratically elected sovereign Ukrainian nation-state.”

Refugee Migrant Centre

In times of crisis, refugees must be able to rely on clear and informed guidance. The Refugee and Migrant Centre is an award-winning charity, with its headquarters based in Wolverhampton. Founded in 1999, RMC has a team of qualified caseworkers accredited to Level 1 and Level 2 with the Office of Immigration Services Commissioner (OISC). In 2019 alone, they supported nearly 14,000 individuals of 148 nationalities speaking over 40 languages.

As part of their everyday service, resources and efforts are being focused on the displacement of the Ukrainian people. An official statement issued says: “RMC is and will continue to be here to support those in need. Our emergency appeal will provide additional capacity for the resettlement support these individuals and families desperately need.”

People of Wolverhampton Gather for Ukraine Vigil

Speaking of the Refugee Migrant Centre, a vigil was hosted by them in the city centre on Thursday 10th March. Mayor Greg Brackenridge attended and spoke at the event at St Peter’s Square along with members of the local Ukrainian community.

The vigil opened with a Ukrainian prayer by Slava, a local Ukrainian, spoken first in Ukrainian, then afterwards in English.

The prayer included: “We pray for the people of Ukraine, for all those suffering or afraid, that you will be close to them and protect them.

It’s heartening and reassuring to hear of people reaching out and doing what they can to show support, solidarity and to aid the Ukrainian people. We can be proud to see so much action being taken here, in Wolverhampton. Again, we do hope to have you join us Friday 1st April for TheStudios Stand With Ukraine Charity Auction.
