Doesn’t January just feel like a constant Groundhog Day? Don’t worry folks, you’ve nearly made it to the end! The secret to making your working week go faster is to have things you can look forward to at the weekend. So whether you’ve just moved in, or you’ve been with us for yonks – get inspired with things you can do at the weekend around sunny Wolverhampton.
With this unpredictable weather, it can be difficult to plan things to do on the weekends when it’s feeling blustery and cold outside. But in January, we think it’s all about taking a breath and appreciating the small things in life. Like appreciating the smell of a hot coffee on a cold January morning, getting all snug in fluffy blankets, or popping your wooly hats on for a frosty walk. Winter in the UK can be the most beautiful time of the year!
But the dark chilly weather isn’t for everyone. Luckily, we’ve thrown together a few ideas for things to do when it’s just feeling that little bit too cold outside. So, wrap up warm and make the most out of this cold weather – because it won’t be too long before we all start complaining that it’s ‘too hot…’
Wintery Walk in the Park
January can be a walk in the park! Wolverhampton has got some lovely parks to have a stroll around. Make the most of a sunny morning with a wander around some of the city’s green spaces.
There’s West Park, or East Park; the latter boasts a beautiful boating lake. If it’s cold enough, you might catch it when the top has frozen over!
West Park is slightly closer to the centre, just a 12 minute walk away from TheStudios. And if you head over to West Park there’s a lovely little tea room in the middle, so grab yourself a nice hot choccy and something sweet after your walk.
East Park is quite a longer walk away from TheStudios, so it’s far enough to feel like you’re on a good walk, but not too far away from TheStudios.
If you enjoy getting your weekend off to a running start, then why not take part in Wolverhampton’s weekly park run? It takes place every Saturday at 9am.
While running increases your heart rate and decreases blood pressure, it also helps to relieve any mental tension and stress you may be feeling. Running can do wonders for your mental health!
Although we realise this might not be everyone’s cup of tea, you may enjoy our next suggestion a little more…
If all this outdoorsy exercise nonsense is sounding a little bit out of your comfort zone, go and visit the Bank’s Brewery Tour! It’s a perfect day out if you’re up for learning all there is to know about the sacred golden liquid! Perfect for those who’ve just moved to Wolverhampton and want to know a little bit more about one of the most well-known lager companies in the UK! There’s tonnes of history, interesting information and (more importantly), BEER!
The Brewery tour gives you three free half pints to taste as part of the tour, and they even hold up to 20 people as a maximum tour capacity – so it’s a great place to go if you’ve got friends visiting Wolverhampton. Even better, this is a great option for a rainy day when all you crave is a toasty beer blanket.
The theatre industry has taken a real blow during the last two years. However, the curtains are slowly opening and live entertainment is soon to be back and booming. Have a look at some of the listings that are on with Wolverhampton’s very own Grand Theatre!
The theatre, built in 1894 by Charles J Phipps boasts some beautiful architecture in this building, perfect for historians looking to get a bit of Wolverhampton culture.
If you’re feeling a day of cycling, why not cycle to Birmingham along the canal route? If you’re the outdoorsy type – this is definitely the trip for you! Cycling will help you warm up from the January weather, as well as help release endorphins and any stress built up from the month so far. Breeze through an array of little bridges and barges as you travel through the pretty Wolverhampton – Birmingham countryside.
The route is mainly off-road, with 90% of the journey being off any main roads, making this route safe.
Enjoy Birmingham’s vast array of cafes, shops, restaurants, and parks once you’ve arrived, before taking the cycle back home to Wolverhampton. The route is helpfully signposted, making the journey a cycling breeze.
